The tide-predicting machine invented because of the Scottish scientist Sir William Thomson in 1872 was of terrific utility to navigation in shallow waters. It used a system of pulleys and wires to mechanically work out predicted tide ranges for any set period at a specific location.The pattern may be a little something normal, like the appearance o
